Although Cascade Christian defeated the Coupeville High School football team 47-8 Friday, Nov. 4, at Mickey Clark Field, the game wasn’t without highlights for the Wolves in their final contest of the fall.

Coupeville junior receiver Hunter Smith broke several school single-season records in the game and, with one more year of eligibility, is closing in on a couple of career marks.

Cascade Christian came into the game with a 9-0 record and ranked fifth in the AP 1A state poll. The win wrapped up the conference title for the Cougars in the first year of the combining of the Nisqually and Olympic leagues into one football conference.

The Wolves went into the battle without two of their top players and leaders, seniors Jacob Martin (hand injury) and Clay Reilly (concussion).

Coupeville, under first-year coach Jon Atkins, finished the year 3-7, picking up two more wins over last year’s single-win season.

The Cougars, ignited by four touchdowns by Zach Bartolome, raced to a 40-0 halftime lead.

Coupeville’s touchdown came in the fourth quarter when junior QB Hunter Downes hit Smith on a short scoring toss. Smith ran for the two-point conversion.

Smith’s touchdown reception was his 11th, breaking Josh Bayne’s former single-season record of 10 set in 2016.

In the game, Smith caught nine passes for 124 yards. The yardage pushed his season total to 915, another school single-season record. Chad Gale owned the former standard with 844 yards in 1987.

For his career, Smith has 1,334 yards and 13 touchdowns. Both marks are near Gale’s school records of 1,345 yards and 17 TDs.

Smith also finished the year with 11 career interceptions, one behind Bayne’s CHS record.

Downes just missed setting his own school record. He threw for 1,559 yards this year and 17 touchdowns. The touchdown total is just one shy of Joel Walstad’s record of 18.

Downes threw for 143 yards on 11 completions against Cascade Christian. Nine of those throws went to Smith; Cameron Toomey-Stout received the remaining two for 19 yards.
