The Coupeville High School boys basketball team dropped a pair of games over the weekend, losing 48-37 at Klahowya in an Olympic League contest Friday, Dec. 9, then falling 80-45 to visiting South Whidbey Saturday evening.

Both teams entered the game looking for their first victory of the season, and the Eagles came away with the “W” after winning only one of their previous 25 games.

Coupeville played catchup all afternoon, falling behind 16-2 in the first quarter. The Wolves eventually trimmed the gap to six in the fourth period but couldn’t get any closer.

John Hartford netted 9 points in the Eagles’ big first quarter while the Wolves managed just two foul shots by Hunter Smith.

Gabe Wynn and Brian Shank each scored 5 points for Coupeville in the second quarter, but Klahowya, behind 7 points by Sawyer Snope, upped its lead by 1 point, 31-16, at halftime.

The Wolves cut into the Eagles’ advantage in the third period. Wynn scored 9 of Coupeville’s 14 points, Klahowya tallied only 5 and the score stood 36-28 going into the final eight minutes.

The Wolves whittled the lead to 6 and then hurt their comeback effort by making only one of seven free throws in the quarter.

For the game, Coupeville connected on only seven of 17 foul shots, even with Smith going 5-for-5.

Wynn ended to game with 14 points, Smith 13, Shank 5 and Ethan Spark 5.

Hartford and Snope each scored 19 points for Klahowya.

Coupeville (0-2, 0-5) hosts Klahowya (1-1, 2-4) in a rematch at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13. The Eagles picked up another win Saturday, whipping Mount Vernon Christian 66-36.

South Whidbey 80, Coupeville 45

It was a game for 10 minutes.

The Flacons led 12-10 after the first quarter and by only four, 17-13, two minutes into the second period. From that point, South Whidbey blistered the Wolves with a 24-5 run to take a 41-18 lead into halftime. It was 66-31 after three quarters.

South Whidbey never let up, using a full-court press and playing its top players deep into the game.

Smith scored 19 points for Coupeville, followed by Shank (12), Spark (10), Cameron Toomey-Stout (3) and Wynn (1).

Kody Newman drained five three-pointers and finished with 21 points to pace the Falcons. Three others scored in double figures: Lewis Pope (16), Kellen Boyd (13) and Maxfield Friedman (12).
