A second-half surge carried the Coupeville High School girls basketball team to a 39-29 win at Port Townsend Tuesday, Jan. 3.

The win upped the Wolves’ Olympic League win streak to 21 games over three years. It also helped Coupeville go unscathed through the first of three rounds against conference foes this winter.

In addition, Coupeville (3-0, 7-3) handed the Redhawks (2-1, 5-4) their first league loss of 2016-17 and knocked Port Townsend out of a tie for the conference lead.

As has been the theme all season, Coupeville got off to a slow start, trailing most of the first half.

This time, however, the deficit was slight as the Wolves were down 10-9 and 17-15 after the first two quarters.

Three Wolves had two fouls each in the first half, allowing PT to go to the line eight times where it sank five foul shots.

The tide turned to Coupeville in the second half.

“Everything seemed to be working well for us,” coach David King said.

Coupeville took the lead three minutes into the second half and pushed the gap to as many as 10 points, outscoring the Redhawks 15-6 in the period.

Kalia Littlejohn led the rush with 6 points, Lindsey Roberts added 4 and Kailey Kellner drained a three-ball.

While the Wolves offense was heating up, its defense limited Port Townsend’s leading scorer Kaitlyn Meek to 1 point in the second half.

“We are athletic and deep enough that we were able to rotate four players on her all game,” King said. “We started with Lauren Grove. Mikayla (Elfrank), Kalia and Kailey all got a chance to play her. The rest of the team brought their defensive game as well, minimizing the scoring opportunities with the rest of their roster.”

The Wolves also benefitting from improved rebounding in the second half, grabbing 14 boards after snaring only six in the first half.

Coupeville also cut down on turnovers, committing only half as many (six) after the break as in the first half.

Kellner scored 11 points, Roberts 10, Mia Littlejohn 8, Kalia Littlejohn 6, Elfrank 2 and Sarah Wright 2.

Grove and Roberts collected six rebounds apiece, and Mia Littlejohn had three assists.

Meek topped Townsend with 10 points.

“This was one of our most complete games,” King said. “We are still a work in progress, but it’s exciting because we are seeing more consistent play from each player.”

Coupeville completes a run of six consecutive road games when it goes to Chimacum (1-2, 6-4) at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6.
