Coupeville dumps Falcons again | Baseball

The Coupeville High School baseball team defeated South Whidbey for the second time this week, topping the Falcons 6-1 at Robert Sherman Field Thursday, March 20.

Aaron Curtin limited the Falcons to only five hits over six innings and struck out six to slow the Falcon offense. He was aided by several key defensive plays, and C.J. Smith pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to finish off the win.

South Whidbey threatened in the first, but third baseman Ben Etzell made a leaping grab of a line drive and doubled off the runner at second to halt the Falcons. Shortstop Josh Bayne made a similar play in the sixth, and center fielder Wade Schaef made a diving, run-saving catch in the fifth.

Coupeville scored in the first on an RBI single by Morgan Payne.

After South Whidbey tied it in the top of the fourth, the Wolves answered in their half. Curtin singled, moved up on Korbin Korzan's bunt and scored on an error.

Doubles by Korzan and Schaef highlighted a three-run fifth.

In the sixth, Bayne singled, stole second and scored on Jake Tumblin's single.

Tumblin finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and three stolen bases.

Coupeville (2-0) finishes its three-game series with South Whidbey (0-2, 1-2) at 4 p.m. in Langley Friday, March 21.
