A 4-1 win over visiting Sultan Monday, April 22, by the Coupeville High School baseball team pushed the Wolves to within a half game of third place in the Cascade Conference standings.

Ben Etzell pitched a complete game seven-hitter, striking out 11 and walking only three along the way. Kurtis Smith sparked the offense with three hits.

Smith got things going in the first with a leadoff single. He eventually scored when Jake Tumblin's popup fell among four Turk fielders just behind second base.

Sultan tied it in the fourth when it collected three of its seven hits.

Coupeville quickly regained the lead by scoring in its half of the fourth. Kyle Bodamer doubled, moved to third on Aaron Trumbull's sacrifice bunt and scored on Korbin Korzan's fly ball.

The Wolves added two more runs in the sixth. With one out, Trumbull reached on an error. Back-to-back singles by Korzan and Smith plated one run, then Drew Chan's fly ball scored the second.

Tumblin finished with two hits.

The Wolves (6-9, 7-9), who trail South Whidbey by one game in the loss column in the league standings, travel to Sultan (4-11, 4-12) Wednesday, April 24, and then host the Turks again at 4 p.m. Friday.
