Letter: Curbside recycling is the way of the future
I would like to express my strong support for curbside recycling in Island County. Our family lives outside of the Town of Coupeville.
We currently collect our recycling and self haul it to the Coupeville transfer station every two weeks.
In addition we pay for weekly garbage pick-up.
I support curbside recycling for the following reasons:
I can avoid the trip to the county transfer station every other week and all the time it takes to load and unload my recycling;
The additional cost for curbside recycling is minimal if you compare it to the time and cost of self hauling;
The funding mechanism would be more equitable for all residents in Island County;
We would achieve a higher recycling rate in Island County.
Why waste valuable resources by throwing them in a landfill? It is very important that we turn our valuable recyclables back into something useful. It is much more costly to society to use virgin resources to create new bottles, cans, paper, etc.
As I identified in my 2011 Island County Resource Conservation Plan, “Curbside recycling represents the single biggest greenhouse gas emissions reduction opportunity in our county.”
We as a county need to be more progressive. Curbside recycling has been in place in cities and counties across the United States for many years. We are the only county in our region without a curbside recycling program. Curbside recycling ignites conversations around resource conservation and can lead to bigger and better sustainability projects.
I would like to express my thanks to the Island County staff for taking the leadership on this effort. I fully support this initiative and hope we can push this through in 2012.
