Lions bringing new life to Town Park kitchen shelter

The Coupeville Lions Club has been hard at work since the summer renovating the kitchen shelter at Coupeville Town Park.

The project was chosen as the club’s Legacy Project for the Lions Club International’s Centennial Celebration.

The Centennial Celebration is bringing Lions together to celebrate 100 years of humanitarian service. Lions around the world are joining in this celebration by expanding community impact through service projects and inspiring others to join in that service, according to Lion Jackie Feusier.

The project includes replacing equipment, replacing the roof, rotted wood, painting, flooring and rewiring.

The project is being completed in stages over the last several months.

This week Lions were hard at work degreasing, pressure washing and etching the floor of the shelter.

“If all goes to plan, the floor will be done by the end of the week,” said Lion Bob Johnson, who is overseeing the project.

He anticipates installing sinks, plumbing and counters next week.

“We may be able to complete all but electrical by Nov. 18,” Johnson said.

While working on this renovation, Lions also identified some other potential projects for the future.

Johnson said one Lion evaluated the structure’s stability and ability to withstand an earthquake.

“There are a number of modifications we could do to improve the chances of the shelter to withstand a tremblor,” he said.

That project may be considered next spring.

The kitchen shelter was built in the mid-1930s and has been maintained by the Town of Coupeville ever since, according to Feusier.

Mayor Molly Hughes said the shelter has been used by many families and organizations over the years, celebrating holidays, birthdays, weddings, family reunions, neighborhood gatherings and more.

When not booked, the shelter is available on a first come basis. No keys necessary, there are no doors.
