A 75-year-old Coupeville man died after jumping from Deception Pass Bridge Sunday afternoon, according to Island County Coroner Robert Bishop.

Ralph McCloud stopped his car in the middle of the bridge, turned on his car’s hazard lights and got out. He walked to the west side of the bridge and jumped into the swirling water below, according to the coroner.

McCloud left a note in his vehicle, which was impounded by the Washington State Patrol.

Several people, including other drivers, witnessed McCloud jump off the bridge. The incident was reported to police at 3:20 p.m. McCloud’s body was recovered from the water about an hour later.

McCloud was part-owner of a small Coupeville bed-and-breakfast called Aerie on Penn Cove. He purchased the historic building early last year and opened the business last spring.
