County conducting appraisals

November 8, 2012 · Updated 11:57 AM

Appraisers with the Island County Assessor’s Office will soon be knocking on Coupeville doors  for property inspections.

County employees will be out until March 2013 assessing the quality and condition of homes and buildings.

The appraisals help determine assessed values for the purpose of determining property taxes for 2014.

Approximately 7,000 properties will be inspected. The  area spans from approximately Van Dam Road south to Race Road.

State law requires that each property in Island County receive a visit and inspection every six years. State law also authorizes access onto properties for this inspection. All appraisers are deputized.

Island County staff will be in official vehicles and have a visible Island County identification badge.

Fair market value is based on comparisons with similar properties that have sold, and are most fair and equitable when based on property characteristics that are accurately recorded in the assessor’s office from property inspections, Island County Assessor Mary Engle said.

Individuals with questions may contact the Assessor’s Office at 360-679-7303 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
