Roundabout considered for Parker Road

Months after local residents questioned the safety of proposed changes to the intersection of Parker Road and Hwy. 20, transportation officials are looking at new options.

Several options to alter the intersection that is an important part Island Transit’s headquarters construction project are being considered. The public transportation agency needs the changes to make room for a secondary access to the headquarters. Todd Harrison, regional administrator for the Washington State Department of Transportation. said options that are being considered range from installing a roundabout, adding a left-turn lane or realigning the intersections.

Once those options are finalized, a public meeting will be scheduled.

While WSDOT doesn’t have money for construction for changes to the Parker and Morris roads areas of Hwy. 20, it does have money to design a possible project. Harrison said the state agency has $1.5 million in unobligated federal gas tax dollars.

That money must be returned to the federal government at the end of the October fiscal year if it isn’t used for a project.
