National Night Out set for Aug. 7

The 29th annual National Night Out will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7 at Windjammer Park in Oak Harbor.

The unique crime and drug prevention event involves citizens, law enforcement agencies, emergency personnel, personnel from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, social service organizations, civic groups, businesses and local officials from the city and Island County. The State Patrol, U.S. Border Patrol, Homeland Security and the FBI will also be represented.

The event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for participation in local anticrime programs, strengthen community spirit and police-community partnerships and send a message to criminals that communities are organized and fighting back.

"Instead of doing the traditional block party, we invite the whole community to a party at Windjammer Park," said Oak Harbor Police Sgt. Cedric Niiro, event committee chairman. "All types of vendors are encouraged to participate, including local clubs, organizations, food vendors and businesses. many free family activities will be available during the event, including demonstrations and hands-on activities for all ages."

Some planned events include life guard demonstrations, NAS Whidbey K-9 and Search and Rescue demonstrations, DUI Car Crash demonstration and a climbing wall from NAS Whidbey Morale, Welfare and Recreation.
