Coupeville's Prairie Center removes pumps
Joe Black, of Concrete Northwest, fills empty fuel tanks at Prairie Center Red Apple in Coupeville. The store sold fuel to Central Whidbey motorists for at least 65 years, but had to quit last fall. - Justin Burnett photo Jan 17 2013, 1:00 PM All things must eventually come to an end and this week it was Prairie Center Red Apple’s old gas pumps. That chapter in the town’s history was literally sealed Tuesday with a blurp and gurgle as workers topped off the store’s three underground gas tanks with concrete. “We just couldn’t be competitive,” said Ken Hofkamp, the store’s owner for the past 40 years.
Book looks at Coupeville through children’s eyes
Jan 17 2013, 1:01 PM Kids have a unique way of looking at things. The project was the brainchild of Coupeville Boys and Girls Club Program Director Jo-Ellen Fischbach and was made possible by a grant from the Coupeville Festival Association. Fischbach said this was a great project for Coupeville kids to get involved with.

Jan 23 2013, 12:15 PM Island County Commissioner Jill Johnson doesn’t like bullies and she isn’t going to be blindly loyal to her political party. If that hadn’t already been made clear by her record during her first two weeks in office, the freshman Republican commissioner dispelled any misconceptions about how she plans to approach her job, and deal with harsh criticism from fellow party members, during an Old Goats-Fully Informed Voters luncheon on South Whidbey this past Friday.

Letter: We need to find other options for OLF flights
Jan 23 2013, 12:55 PM There have been two recent articles related to the Outlying Field in Coupeville, each attesting to the urgency of the need to continue the important pilot training that takes place there. There seems to be an underlying message, in these articles, that people may not acknowledge, understand, or care, just how essential this training is.
