Admirals Cove weighs future of community pool
Admirals Cove homeowner Suzy Palmer is hoping to gain support for a plan to rehabilitate the community’s pool, which is in need of expensive repair and maintenance work. Without further investment, the pool could be closed for good. But some in the neighborhood say they don’t use the pool and don’t want to help pay for the work – even if it does make their homes more marketable to many homebuyers. - Elisabeth Murray photo Oct 15 2012, 10:18 AM The gate has been padlocked and a red sign in the window says “closed.” The Admirals Cove Beach Club pool has closed for the season, but some in the community hope it’s closed for good. Other community members are hoping to rescue it from demolition.
Linds robbery suspect charged
Oct 15 2012, 10:18 AM A 24-year-old Bremerton man accused of robbing a Coupeville pharmacy at gunpoint two years ago was finally charged with the crime, but remains in an Oregon prison, according to court documents. Prosecutors charged George Skurtu in Island County Superior Court Sept. 26 with first-degree robbery. Skurtu became a suspect in the Jan. 4, 2010 robbery after he and another man were arrested for armed robbery four days later in Dallas, Ore.

Dedication earns honors for Booster Club mom

District 1 (Western Washington school districts north of Seattle) of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association recently presented Coupeville’s Christy Kellison with the Dave DuVall Award for her dedication to CHS athletics. It didn’t take long for Kellison to get involved with the Booster Club after moving to Coupeville from Oregon in 2008. In 2009, she was named to its board and she has served as president for the past three years.
Market hosts relay races, giant pumpkin contest
Oct 11 2012, 10:37 AM The Coupeville Farmers Market hosts its annual HarvestFest on Saturday, Oct. 13 – the final market day of the year. The market will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the annual Giant Pumpkin Weigh-in set for 11 a.m. No registration or fee required for entry. Prizes will be awarded for the biggest pumpkin, the biggest pumpkin by a junior (age through middle school), the prettiest and ugliest pumpkins and the biggest zucchini.

Interfaith vigil planned
Oct 11 2012, 10:02 AM The ninth annual Whidbey Interfaith Vigil of Peace and Hope will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14 at St. Augustine’s-in-the-Woods Episcopal Church, 5217 Honeymoon Bay Road, Freeland. The vigil will feature prayer, music chants and scripture contributions from Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Native American faith traditions on Whidbey Island.
