The Island County Board of Commissioners have chosen Robert Pederson, a community planning administrator in Manatee, Fla., as Island County's next director of Planning and Community Development.
The board met Friday, July 10, and voted unanimously to offer Pederson the job. He was one of two top finalists from a pool of over 40 applicants, according to Commissioner John Dean.
"In some sense, he may be overqualified," Dean said.
Pederson started his career in 1978 in Yakima County as a planning technician. He then went on to join the Peace Corps, spending two years in Jamaica. Since then, he has been a senior planner and zoning administrator in Fairbanks, Alaska and an associate planner on Kodiak Island, Alaska, and served as deputy director of the planning department in Washington's San Juan County.
Dean said Pederson would be contacted today, July 10, and officially offered the job. Pederson's salary and start date are still being negotiated.
