There’s still time to sign up for the Harvest Fest Relay Races.

The annual event, which raises money for the Gifts From the Heart food bank, is being held at noon Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Coupeville Farmer’s Market.

The food bank’s only fundraiser, the relay races raised nearly $14,000 last year.

An anonymous donor stepped forward offering to match donations collected by the Coupeville Historic Waterfront Association up to $2,500, according the Vickie Chambers, executive director of the association.

“Your donations will be doubled if your contribute between now and Oct. 7,” she said.

Eight teams competed in last year’s race. All of them endured pouring rain while completing legs of the usually agricultural-related relay.

Teams are encouraged to be creative in coming up with fun team names and themes, said Peg Tennant, with the farmer’s market.

Each year, Tennant is assigned the task of coming up with some of the relay activities.

“The games in the relay could be viewed as oldies but goodies,” she said.

Money raised from the relay cover about one-fifth of the food bank’s annual expenses. The money helps the food bank fulfill its mission of “respectfully providing food to those in need.”

In 2015, Gifts From the Heart provided meals to 147 families during Thanksgiving and 168 families at Christmas; it served a total of 2,551 families, which included more than 6,600 individuals.

Thirty-two percent of the food bank’s clients are children ages 18 or younger and 25 percent are seniors over 55.

Each school year the food bank sends food home for students in need to eat over the weekend. A total of 43 elementary school children receive food each week.

The relay is being held in conjunction with Harvest Fest, which celebrates the last farmers market of the season.

There will be no Giant Pumpkin Contest this year, but Tennant said she is working on an activity to replace it, possibly an “apple swap.”
