The Pacific Rim Institute of Environmental Stewardship is holding an open house this week that will include tours of the property’s prairie and forest lands and an honoring of special guests.

The “PRI Prairie Open House” is May 12-15 with tours at 10 a.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday and at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday.

The evening tour Thursday and morning tours Friday and Saturday will feature a look at the barn owls who reside on the property

The Pacific Rim Institute is a 175-acre property that partners with the Au Sable Institute to offer field-based college courses and is also the site of various research projects. The land was once a state game farm where pheasants were raised. It is located at 180 Parker Road in Coupeville.

At 3 p.m. Saturday, the faith-based environmental learning center will honor special guests Cal and Ruth DeWitt, who are visiting Whidbey Island this week.

All are welcome to attend a ceremony and refreshments will be provided.

Cal DeWitt was the visionary who saw the potential of the property and purchased it from the state in the late 1990s, said Robert Pelant, chief executive officer of the Pacific Rim Institute.
