Coupeville the cradle of coffee craze

Coupeville is known for many things – and can even claim credit for being the cradle of the worldwide coffee craze.

The Coupeville Historic Waterfront Association, the Island County Historical Museum and the Central Whidbey Chamber of Commerce are joining forces to honor Jim and Dave Stewart, founders of Seattle's Best Coffee, which got its start 43 years ago on Front Street.

The Stewart brothers began roasting coffee beans and selling their now world famous brew from their ice cream shop, the Wet Whisker, which was located at 21 Front Street. As the coffee business grew, the name was changed to Stewart Brothers Coffee, then to SBC and finally to Seattle's Best Coffee.

A celebration honoring the Stewart brothers is planned for Thursday, Aug. 30, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Coupeville Recreation Hall on Coveland Street. This free, fun evening will feature Jim and Dave. Learn about their early years on Whidbey Island and what they've been up to since selling their pioneering coffee company. Hear what goes into making a good cup of coffee, from the plantation to the cup. Sample coffee-inspired desserts, enjoy some ice cream and of course, some coffee. Door prizes will also be awarded.
